Someone needs to teach Symantec the definition of "ignore"
I’ve been using Norton Antivirus (NAV) for a long time. Honestly. And not because I worked for Symantec for 9 years. I used it even before I worked there. And I continue to use it even though I don’t work there any longer. But let me tell you, every day, often many times a day, I’m annoyed by this software. I’ve even gone as far as finding a new product that I’m considering switching to as soon as my definitions expire (in a month or so). That’s how annoying this “feature” is. Here’s how it goes:
- I open my email client and Norton scans all incoming mail for malware - this is good and why I use NAV.
- Thunderbird automatically filters a lot of the malware messages into my Junk folder without me doing anything. This is also good, and why I use Thunderbird.
- NAV sees a malware in the Junk folder and alerts me “There is malware in the Junk folder, do you want me to delete it? Ignore / Delete”. Be aware that when NAV does this it steals the focus from any other application that is running. So that I’m typing an article and then BOOM I’m forced to tell it to fucking IGNORE the problem yet again.
- I always choose Ignore, because while I like Thunderbird, the way it handles the mail means that NAV deletes the entire folder and sometimes the entire mailbox gets corrupted if I delete the malware. So I ignore it and then delete the folder later when I’ve reviewed it.
- About 30 seconds after clicking Ignore, NAV pops up another window telling me that it’s ignored the threat because it can’t do anything about it and I said to ignore it. Um, thanks. When I said ignore, I really meant “shut up about it” but that’s not a choice.
- Then 10-20 minutes later, when I get more mail, NAV scans the Junk folder again and the process starts all over again. This happens all day long!
Symantec! What part of ignore do you not understand? Nevermind that the majority of malware that I’m “protected” from are Windows-specific malware, I have to tell NAV to ignore it constantly. I’m reminded of the cartoon where the kid says “I’m shutting up, when you tell me to shut up I instantly shut up, because I understand that to shut up is important and I want to shut up because I like to shut up….” and the man responds “SHUT UP SHUTTING UP!” Of course, NAV for Mac has traditionally sucked, so the fact that I’m forcing myself to use it says something about my loyalty. Any suggestions for great Mac malware protection?
